A trailblazer in the use of plastics in furniture manufacturing, she played a pivotal role in shaping the modern design landscape of the 20th century.After graduating in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1943, Castelli Ferrieri became one of the first women to establish herself in the male-dominated fields of architecture and industrial design. In 1949, she co-founded Kartell with her husband, Giulio Castelli, a brand that would become synonymous with innovative and stylish plastic furniture and homeware.Her designs for Kartell, such as the Componibili storage units (1967), epitomize her ability to merge form and function while harnessing the versatility of modern materials. These iconic modular storage units are still in production today and are celebrated for their timeless appeal and practicality.Throughout her career, Castelli Ferrieri collaborated with other notable designers and architects, expanding the influence of Italian design globally. She was a strong advocate for sustainability and functionality in design, emphasizing that objects should be as useful as they are beautiful.
