More about Miguel Milà

Miguel Milá is one of Spain’s most influential designers and a key figure in the country's modern design movement. Born in 1931 into a family of architects in Barcelona, Milá began his career in the 1950s, at a time when Spain had limited access to modern industrial materials and technologies. This scarcity drove him to create simple yet elegant designs using traditional materials like wood and rattan, which became signature elements of his work.

Milá is best known for his timeless furniture and lighting designs that emphasize functionality, simplicity, and craftsmanship. His work is considered a bridge between modernism and the traditional craftsmanship of Spain, combining practicality with aesthetic harmony. Among his most iconic creations are the TMC (1958) and TMM (1961) lamps, which have become symbols of 20th-century Spanish design. These designs, marked by their clean lines and use of natural materials, remain popular today.

In 1960, Milá co-founded Tramo, a company dedicated to producing modern furniture and lighting. His collaboration with Polinax in the 1960s further solidified his status as a leading designer, producing pieces like the Max Bill and M68 lamps. Over the years, Milá has worked with various prestigious design firms, including Santa & Cole, who continue to produce many of his classic designs.

Miguel Milá's contributions have earned him numerous awards, including the National Design Award in 1987 and the Golden Compass Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His philosophy of creating durable, user-friendly designs has made his work a benchmark in both Spanish and international design.

Today, Milá’s designs are still admired for their timeless appeal and commitment to sustainability, proving that good design can endure for decades without losing relevance.
